Ann Theodore Foundation Learning Opportunities in Medicine and Sarcoidosis

Support for new talent in the sarcoidosis research and clinical field is key to accelerating breakthroughs in sarcoidosis research. The Ann Theodore Foundation Learning Opportunities in Medicine and Sarcoidosis (ATF-LOMAS) initiative is designed to provide funding support for early-career sarcoidosis researchers. The initiative will fund research, mentorship, and salary support for young investigators who were recently appointed to full-time research faculty positions. SPARC administers the initiative.

Scientific Priorities

ATF-LOMAS prioritizes:

  • foundational and translational investigations into sarcoidosis
  • epidemiological and clinical heterogeneity studies
  • a mentorship and talent pipeline in the field

  • up to five two-year research grants annually
  • up to $200,000 in funding over two years, including indirect costs

Catherine Bonham, MD

Dr. Bonham leads the Sarcoidosis Center of Excellence at the University of Virginia as its scientific director. Her research interests include translational immunology and the genetics and genomics of sarcoidosis-associated pulmonary fibrosis.

Erica Herzog, MD, PhD

Dr. Herzog is the John Slade Ely Endowed Professor of Medicine at Yale University and is most well known for her studies of inflammatory remodeling of the lung and other organs in diseases such as sarcoidosis.

Ogugua Obi, MD, MPH, MSc, FCCP

Dr. Obi is an associate professor of medicine and a pulmonary and critical care physician at East Carolina University (ECU). She is also the director of the ECU Sarcoidosis Center, which she helped establish as a World Association of Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Disorders–recognized Center of Excellence.

Any faculty-level research at a nonprofit research organization, academic or otherwise, is eligible to apply for ATF-BSI funding.
