Sarcoidosis Case Study
Sarcoidosis is a complex, underfunded disease. In partnership with the Ann Theodore Foundation, SPARC launched the Breakthrough Sarcoidosis Initiative to accelerate research, foster collaboration, and drive progress.
Sarcoidosis is a life-changing immune disorder that can affect any organ in the body, leading to decreases in quality of life and, sometimes, death. Alongside the Ann Theodore Foundation (ATF), SPARC has developed and implemented multiple philanthropic strategies dedicated to supporting the sarcoidosis research community.
In partnership with ATF, SPARC identified several underfunded areas where philanthropic dollars could help advance the field and drive progress toward better treatments and, eventually, a cure for sarcoidosis. SPARC identified several barriers that could be addressed to advance what science understands about sarcoidosis and how it is treated.
This work was published in a Giving Smarter Guide in 2021 that outlines how philanthropy could support sarcoidosis. The report provides an overview of the state of the sarcoidosis field, as well as a funding analysis of sarcoidosis research. These findings are followed by specific philanthropic opportunities for motivated funders.
Since then, SPARC and ATF have launched two grant programs—ATF Breakthrough Sarcoidosis Initiative and ATF Learning Opportunities in Medicine and Sarcoidosis (LOMAS)—to support foundational research in sarcoidosis, including promoting early-career researchers.
ATF-LOMAS
ATF and SPARC launched a grant program in 2025 specifically designed to support early-career independent sarcoidosis investigators. This program offers mentorship matching to support early-career investigators as they build their research programs.
I am a sarcoidosis researcher seeking funding. Can I apply for funding right now?
ATF-LOMAS is accepting applications until October 27, 2025. This program is open to early-career investigators, which is defined as an independent researcher within the first five years of their faculty appointment. Applicants must not have received an award totaling over $250,000 per year
How many researchers has ATF funded to date?
ATF has provided funding to 21 teams, totaling over $10 million.

Sarcoidosis is a complex, often lifelong disease with limited treatment options and high costs for patients. To help address these challenges, the Ann Theodore Foundation partnered with SPARC to advance research and better support the sarcoidosis community.
SPARC examines recent advances in sarcoidosis research, from progress toward a simple blood test to new treatment options and insights into cardiac sarcoidosis. The piece highlights the impact of philanthropic funding, key research collaborations, and efforts to improve clinical trial diversity.
