Mental Health

Mental health is foundational to our well-being, yet millions of people worldwide live with conditions that are misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and underserved. From bipolar disorder to schizophrenia, anxiety to misophonia, serious mental illnesses and other mental health conditions impact how individuals think, feel, connect, and function—presenting profound challenges for families and communities.

SPARC partners with philanthropic leaders to address these challenges head-on. We build bold, science-driven strategies to close knowledge gaps, catalyze investment in overlooked conditions, and chart clear paths from discovery to care. Through initiatives such as Breakthrough Discoveries for thriving with Bipolar Disorder, our long-term commitment to misophonia, and strategic road maps for anxiety and schizophrenia, we work alongside funders, researchers, clinicians, and individuals with lived experience to transform mental health outcomes and ensure that every person has the chance to thrive.

Active Funding Programs

Breakthrough Discoveries for thriving with Bipolar Disorder (BD2)

BD2 funds and advances research and care for individuals living with bipolar disorder. Active funding programs include Discovery Research, Brain Omics, Bipolar Genetics, and BD2 Integrated Network.

Programmatic Areas

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder affects at least 40 million people worldwide, yet its causes remain poorly understood—resulting in delayed diagnosis, limited treatment options, and inadequate care. To change this, SPARC launched BD2, the largest philanthropic initiative focused on bipolar research, accelerating progress from scientific discovery to real-world care so that all people with bipolar disorder can thrive.

Misophonia

Misophonia is a disorder of decreased tolerance to specific sounds or their associated stimuli and is estimated to affect as much as one-fifth of the population to some degree. Despite its prevalence, misophonia is poorly understood, with limited dedicated investment and research. Beginning in 2019, SPARC initiated a long-term effort to understand key challenges in the misophonia community and to develop and implement a comprehensive philanthropic strategy to build a fundamental understanding of misophonia and drive increased rigor in clinical research and care.

Schizophrenia

Navigating care for schizophrenia is complex and challenging for diagnosed individuals and their families because of diagnostic difficulties, limited treatment options, and fragmented support systems. SPARC has partnered with multiple philanthropic families to develop a road map for high-impact philanthropic opportunities aimed at transforming care for individuals and families affected by schizophrenia.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a widespread and often debilitating condition, yet its biological roots remain poorly understood because of the complexity of factors spanning molecular, neural, and behavioral systems. SPARC is leading a comprehensive initiative to map the anxiety research landscape, identify key barriers and opportunities, and develop a strategic road map for high-impact philanthropic investment that accelerates scientific breakthroughs and improves outcomes for those living with anxiety.

Promoting Mental Well-Being Across Populations

A multipronged, philanthropic-led approach is essential to strengthening our mental health system—now and for the future. SPARC collaborates with funders, scientific and medical experts, nonprofits, community groups, and individuals with lived experience to drive actionable solutions and advance initiatives that support young people, veterans, individuals, and families facing serious mental illness.
