Science Ecosystem

AI in Health

Every day, research labs and clinics generate vast amounts of data that, until recently, have remained largely untapped due to complexity and inaccessibility. Now, advanced computational tools like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning allow integration, analysis, and interpretation of this data at scale. These technologies offer immense potential to accelerate scientific discovery, deepen our understanding of disease, advance translational research, and enhance clinical care.

Momentum behind AI in biomedical research and health care is rapidly accelerating, opening new frontiers. Yet, significant challenges—such as data quality, interoperability, algorithmic bias, and implementation barriers—must be addressed to realize this potential effectively, responsibly, and equitably.

Science and health funders are at a pivotal moment. Strategic investment at the intersection of AI and health can catalyze breakthroughs that enhance global well-being. SPARC is convening funders and stakeholders from diverse disciplines to foster thoughtful, collaborative partnerships. By working together, philanthropic funders can shape a future in which AI-driven discoveries transform science and human health.

Our Work

Transformative Computational Biology: A Giving Smarter Guide

In 2023, SPARC conducted a comprehensive landscape to better understand the state of the computational biology field. This Giving Smarter Guide highlights four opportunity areas in which strategic philanthropic investment can accelerate and optimize the integration of computational tools within biomedical research and clinical care.

Transformative Computational Biology Grant Program: Partnership with the Biswas Family Foundation

SPARC has partnered with the Biswas Family Foundation since 2023 to advance the integration of computational tools in biomedical research and clinical care. This partnership includes a grant program that focuses on accelerating the use of computational approaches in translational research and clinical settings to improve the well-being and health of the global community.

AI in Neurodegenerative Disease

In 2024, SPARC developed the Artificial Intelligence, Precision Medicine, and Neurodegenerative Disease: A Giving Smarter Guide, which identifies six high-priority opportunities spanning four broad areas in which philanthropy can leverage AI to drive progress in neurodegenerative disease.
