Health Equity in Science

Scientific research is essential to achieving health equity, providing the evidence needed to understand and address disparities across diverse communities. Yet many factors influence which questions are prioritized, who conducts the research, and how funding is allocated, leading to inequities in how science is done. These inequities often result in findings that overlook the needs and lived experiences of marginalized populations, reinforcing health inequities.

To truly advance health equity, research must be rigorous, inclusive, and community centered. Strong science can yield relevant, accessible treatments that target root causes—from socioeconomic barriers to systemic bias. Innovations like genomics, AI, and telemedicine offer new ways to personalize care and expand access. Research also informs policy and public health efforts, helping to build a more equitable health system for all.

In partnership with the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, SPARC analyzed structural inequities across the biomedical research ecosystem. Our findings identify key opportunities for philanthropic investment to help build a more inclusive research environment and improve outcomes for all communities.
