Precision health aims to shift health care from treating illness to preventing it by using data—on, for example, genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors—to predict and maintain health. In this Giving Smarter Guide, SPARC identifies challenges to the adoption of precision health and details targeted opportunities for philanthropy to address these barriers, including the following activities:

  • Develop and standardize precision health tools.
  • Support the creation and use of validated measures to track daily health factors.
  • Assess the cost-effectiveness of these measures in long-term studies.
  • Build and fund specialized platforms for data sharing.
  • Establish an organization dedicated to advancing precision health.

With strategic investment in these tasks, philanthropy can play a critical role in the widespread adoption of precision medicine, leading the shift of our health-care system from reactive to proactive.
