Roadmap for Investment in Dementia Care

People living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) typically live five to 10 years after diagnosis, yet far too many do not receive the high-quality, coordinated care they need to live well. Dementia affects not only memory, but also behavior, mobility, and daily functioning—requiring more than medication. Comprehensive care must combine medical treatment, neuropsychological support, and social services to help individuals and caregivers navigate the full dementia journey.

While significant investments have been made in developing diagnostics and therapies, there has been far less focus on improving care quality and coordination. Yet care is central—spanning early detection and diagnosis, care planning, daily support, and end-of-life services. To improve outcomes, public and private sectors must invest in scalable, comprehensive care models that prioritize quality of life, dignity, and support across the full course of the disease.

SPARC partnered with the Milken Institute Future of Aging and Alzheimer’s Society UK to develop a roadmap identifying the most promising opportunities:

  • Bolster efforts to build the evidence base for care practices
  • Support timely and accurate diagnosis
  • Increase clinical trial recruitment and support
  • Build system and workforce capacity
  • Integrate technology in the care continuum
