Immune and Multi-System Diseases

Type 1 diabetes (T1D), formerly known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. The condition can affect individuals at any age and leads to serious, lifelong health challenges. While there is currently no way to prevent or cure T1D, screening for T1D autoantibodies—particularly during childhood—offers an important opportunity for early detection and intervention.

This roadmap was created with extensive input from a broad range of stakeholders, including experts in T1D research and clinical care, nonprofit leaders, and policymakers in preventive health. It outlines four primary goals and two supporting goals, comprising 16 actionable steps designed to guide the entire T1D community toward one shared objective: making population-wide autoantibody screening a reality.
