Interdisciplinary research drives scientific discovery by bringing together the perspectives, data, and tools of distinct disciplines toward a shared goal. But while interdisciplinary approaches are essential to addressing today’s most pressing problems, those using them face unique obstacles. Barriers such as siloed funding, inconsistent evaluation metrics, and a lack of institutional support can slow progress and limit collaboration.

In this report, SPARC explores how philanthropy can help unlock the full potential of interdisciplinary science. Rather than focusing on a specific disease or area of research, the guide offers a strategic framework for investing in mechanisms that strengthen cross-disciplinary collaboration. We identified four strategies in which philanthropic investment can accelerate the building of an effective interdisciplinary scientific workforce:

  • Support boundary-crossing researchers through flexible fellowships.
  • Build networks and mentorship across disciplines.
  • Encourage institutional models that reward collaboration.
  • Invest in long-term, high-risk interdisciplinary ideas.

With intentional investment in these strategies, philanthropy can lead the way in enabling bold, collaborative science—and help accelerate progress toward a healthier world.
